The Power of Less in Practice

the power of less

While reading “The Power of Less” by Leo Babauta of Zenhabits (dot com), it stirred up ideas and inspiration. His success is impressive, story believable and book- a must read. If you have no clue about who or what I’m writing about, you’re missing out.

I received a copy of the book months ago. However, since I’m in grad school, in the TPD applicant process, engaged and not to mention, a handful of books I’m reading now. Yeah, you get the idea. Today, I finished reading “The Power of Less.” Given all the excitement created by this amazingly practical “how to” guide, I’ve decided to tackle one goal over the next month.

That’s right, only one. This is part of Leo’s message; single vision until to accomplish that one goal.  He uses other phrases like “single tasking.” That’s all for now kids, I’ll share more goodies in the review I’m writing later.

Remaining in the thought- line advocated in the book, I’m limiting myself by only focusing on one goal this month. Wake up at (stay awake) 4:30 am Mon-Fri in an effort to be productive, determine daily MIT’s and enjoy a time of solitude.

In an attempt to remain committed, I plan on reporting here how this one goal (monthly experiment turns out). Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my blogging experimental blogging.

Today’s Attempt

I fell asleep somewhere between 9:30- 10pm. The alarm yelled at 4:30, I got up, went downstairs, gulped water (blotted) and stared into the darkness. The silence was refreshing and enticing because it reminded me that others were still sleeping! So, I went back up stairs, set on the chair to think while focusing on my breathing- I guess that’s called meditating.

Almost thirty minutes passed, I opened my eyes to see the bed. Then I threw myself onto the bed to only sleep more than I really needed. Well, there’s is another factor worth noting. I worked out (gym) yesterday morning and it felt like my body needed more rest than usual.

I’ll give it another shot tomorrow!

What do you all think? Have any advice or stories on how you overcame the bed?

Wow..overcoming the bed huh..
Remember during my uni years, I slept from 9/10pm – 2/3am, then woke up to study.. madness. What keeps me awake is prayers, coffee, and.. determination. Nowdays, cut off the coffee, while the other 2 still remain. I do stare out of the night occasionally (if lucky, there’ll be stars too), and enjoy the calmness while avoiding the mosquitoes’ bites. But only a few seconds as I’m a little scared of the dark. haha..
May try that again sometimes. ^^

Ching Ya,

Oh yeah, during college I lived madness- my sleeping habits were a mess. :) I find tea to be helpful but I enjoy plenty of coffee later. Really, if so I’m sure I might hear about it. Thanks for sharing.

This is a tough one for me as my office and bedroom are the same room, currently. Let us know how it goes for you.

Hi Dennis,

I understand, my desk is in the room where I sleep (free of declutter which helps) so I go into another room, anywhere away from the bed. I’ll keep ya posted. Cheers!
