While determining a list of  blogs I enjoy reading (with the intent to share with you all), my thinking stumbled upon another topic, which gave birth to this post.

I understand how easy it is to get sucked into the rush. We all struggle, to find balance with social media sites like Twitter, Digg and Facebook.

It is possible that people in the blogosphere operate their online adventures: blog reading, social media participating, Twitter use, commenting, etc.,  like they do their daily routines. You know the type: no time for anyone, always busy, no desire to chat and so on.

Is there a correlation between who you are offline and online? If you’re a selfish, self seeking, brat ( or sales person) and never give a second thought about helping your neighbor, why should I believe you care about my growth, success, productivity or blogging development?

We all know what I’m referring to: their circle of friends, social contacts and family situations. I thought to myself, if they’re like this online, it’s scary to imagine them in close quarters or god no- even as neighbor.

You’re A Sales Person if You Do This:

  • Only talk about your product
  • Try to force growth instead of allowing organic growth’
  • Friendly because you’re only after sales.
  • Only focus on your need while neglecting the needs of others.
  • Always talk about yourself
  • Always nod and smile
  • Pretend to be everyone’s best friend
  • Leverage social media because you want more money
  • What else?

You’re An Online Friend if you do this:

  • Discuss quality products, blogs and so on, even if there’s nothing in it for you.
  • Grow your personal brand which isn’t always about you. Skellie covers this quite well
  • Prevent yourself from becoming known (How’s your about page look these days?).
  • Take the time to response to others.
  • Foster relationships beyond hit and run blog commenting and reading.
  • Aim to help others by possibly answering their questions or helping to solve their problems.
  • Send someone a thank you! Liz Strauss has something to say about that
  • What else?

Great post.

I hate to admit that I sometimes fall into the “sales person” category, probably because it’s the “easier” path. It’s a bit more difficult to be thoughtful and to actually take the time to help others just for the sake of helping them.

To the “sales person” list, I’d also add: “always expects something in return,” though I suppose that’s implied. I’ve come across bloggers like that — if they do something nice for you, you’re expected to do something nice for them. It really shouldn’t be that way.

Rob,

I respect your honesty but at some point or another this could happen or does happen to us all. Finding balance, using the proper approach and not become that person people run away from. It’s easy path (like you said) but it’s also a risky venture that would ruin potential relationships. Thanks for visiting Rob and sharing your thoughts. Appreciate the transparency,

Hi Miguel,
Sometimes it’s heart warming to see a blogger talking about bloggers’ struggles and problem faced daily. Not many of my offline friends would understand how ‘hard’ it is to be a ’serious’ blogger (who spend more than half of his/her 24 hrs online). lol..

Ok, back to the post. I can totally hear you. To be a friend/sales person, there’s only one stoke ‘/’ away. I always pray that no matter what the future may bring, to always have the self-conscious to be a decent, humble person. I am surprised, actually, there are so many talented bloggers/enterpreneurs who are so down to earth while successful at the same time. Also the help and support I gained from others during the learning process, makes me realize, to foster a solid, trusted friendship among bloggers are the most valuable gift. I believe ’sincerity’ can be felt, so whether we’re a sales person/friend to someone, it all lies in how we respond to them. (although at times we don’t mean to be a sales person)

It’s a constant reminder, to see more than just ‘ownself’, sometimes to help/share brings alot more satisfactions than just ‘me, me, me!’ alone. It’s a lesson that we’re constantly learning.

Ching Ya,

Always nice to see you… you’re right, many people still don’t know what Twitter is, let alone the challenges faced by bloggers. I’m with you, it’s refreshing to meet many of those nice, humble people, but we still must be careful about who we trust. I’ve been burned once already.

As for the rest of your comment, I appreciate your time and thoughtful words. Thanks for your contribution here at Simply Blog. I agree, people know sincerity when they see it. :) Cheers!
