What is Blog Action Day?

On October 15th bloggers everywhere will publish posts that discuss poverty in some way. By all posting on the same day we aim to change the conversation that day, to raise awareness, start a global discussion and add momentum to an important cause.

Why?

Every blogger has a unique voice, audience and perspective. By speaking to their readers on topic about an important issue we can discuss global issues like poverty in a new and hugely multi-faceted way. And from discussion springs action.

How do you plan on addressing Poverty? What could we do as bloggers? As a global community? to practically deal with with this critical problem.  I have a few suggestions:

  1. Educate yourself.

One of my favorite theologians talks about Global Debt.

“In some of my writings and sermons I have emphasized the importance of cancelling Third World debts.” – N.T Wright

During a lecture he raised the question, Why don’t people ever talk about the debt being held over the heads of smaller, underdeveloped nations?

1.1  Read the entire article for yourself. [here] He also wrote on this topic in his latest book “Surprised By Hope.” Part of the process is researching the issues. It seems like most Americans, or people in general, are sadly to freakin lazy!

2.   Find Organizations & Ways to Get Involved

2.1  Ever heard of the  Jubilee Debt Campaign? if not, you’re missing out!

Rich countries have found ten times as much in ten minutes to bail out reckless bankers as they have in ten years for the world’s poor. The current debt system is completely unjust, and an upcoming conference in Doha has a chance to change it. – Jubilee Debt Campaign site

Find out about conferences, late breaking news and so on. Learn how you can take part in the Global Week of Action and more. [here] Don’t forget to drop by the Blog Action Day site as well. [here]

Why Does Debt Matter? Did you think I was going to give you all the answers? Not so fast, :) If you check out the links given above, you’ll know why. Until next time.
